Jesse Lee Reno (1823–1862) was a career military officer and Union general during the Civil War. Born in Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), Reno graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1846. He served in various military capacities and gained recognition for his contributions during the Mexican-American War. When the Civil War erupted, Reno continued his service with the Union Army, quickly rising through the ranks.
General Reno played a crucial role in several significant battles, including the Battle of South Mountain and the Battle of Antietam during the Maryland Campaign of 1862. Unfortunately, he met a tragic end at the Battle of Fox’s Gap on September 14, 1862, during the South Mountain engagement. Jesse Reno’s legacy is one of military skill and dedication to the Union cause, and his contributions are remembered as part of the larger narrative of the Civil War era.
