I'm pleased to announce that I just completed a portrait of one of my art heroes: Keith Haring. This particular portrait took one month to complete and was created digitally using Procreate illustrator on my iPad. I attempted to capture Keith's seemingly bright attitude while incorporating my rendition of his particular and unique art style in the background.
Keith Haring was a prolific American artist, whom rose to prominence in the 1980s for his vibrant, graffiti-inspired art that was imbued with social and political messages. Born in 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, Haring's signature style featured bold lines, bright colors, and energetic figures that often conveyed themes of love, unity, and activism. His work became a visual commentary on the socio-political landscape of the time, addressing issues such as AIDS, apartheid, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Haring's iconic public art, especially his subway drawings, transformed him into a cultural phenomenon, breaking the boundaries between fine art and street art. His optimism and energy, combined with his desire to create art accessible to all, continue to resonate globally.
His legacy lives on through his art and his activism, notably with the Keith Haring Foundation, which he established in 1989 to support organizations involved in AIDS research and children's programs. Haring's ability to fuse art with advocacy made him not just an artist, but a powerful voice for change.
